Parental literacy

In African countries many parents also have problems in their own education, which might influence to their abilities and possibilities to support their children’s learning.

If the parent are illiterate themselves, it is difficult to support the child to learn to read. It is important to notice that people who have never been at school and have not learned to read are not necessarily “dyslexic” but illiterate. Illiterate means that someone is unable to interact with others through print.

Parental, and especially mothers, schooling and literacy has many positive consequences to child’s development and health and wellbeing of the whole family as described in following figure:
